Sephora released a “New Nudes” campaign a little while ago, and with the launch of so many new products, I found myself with more than a few new lippies to add to my collection. This round-up will most useful for those looking for a nude lip to wear to daily to work/school.
Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Lips
The Be Legendary Liquid Lips were the first products got me into the “new nudes.” I was intrigued by the metallic finish and knew I needed to get at least one. At $28cad they aren’t cheap but the finish is beautiful and they last 2.5-3 hours on me (as long as I don’t eat anything).
Neither of these shades are particularly day-to-day work appropriate, but I do really love wearing Mauve Squad. On darker skin tones Mauve Squad can look a bit frosty, like a Barbie pink, but in my opinion, it works.
I will say that when I re-apply Mauve Squad it collects in my lip lines and picks up on any flakiness that was previously invisible. So I’d suggest removing it completely before reapplying.
Brains ‘N’ Bronze reminds me even more of the 90s/something my mom definitely had in her makeup kit. It’s been tough for me to find an occasion to wear it, but I believe it would look gorgeous and more “nude” on darker skin tones than mine. (I’m imagining Danielle from Style and Beauty Doc).
I really appreciate the finish and how comfortable this formula is. But that has to be weighed against the fact that neither of the “nude” shades are ideal for my skin tone.
Nudestix Magnetic Matte Lip Colour
Now, these were suggested to me by my good friend Mahi as she claimed they stayed on the lips forever. She even sent me a snap using an oil-free makeup remover, and they didn’t budge, so of course, I was intrigued. They’re $28cad at Sephora, but because they last 5+ hours on me, even if I eat something a little oily, I think they’re worth it. (I’m such a sucker for a low-maintenance lip).
Initially, I purchased the shade Boho, but soon realized that it was far too light for my skin tone. I tried to make it work but found it difficult to use it with a lip liner as the matte Lip Color sets very quickly and doesn’t blend well with other products. They’re also quite uncomfortable at first and feel a little tight on the lips, but once you’ve had them on for 15 minutes you hardly notice it. The formula also doesn’t dry out the lips.
This range also includes some red shades, which would be perfect – as you wouldn’t need to touch anything up, but I was strictly looking for nudes. I decided to get Greystone as well, since I’m a true Goldilocks in search of a nude that’s “just right.” As luck would have it, Greystone ended up being too dark and I wasn’t partial to its gray undertones (especially for work). But, the formula is amazing for those interested and it does pass the company’s “kiss-proof” claims.
BareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor
This has been a long-time favourite of mine. In fact I’ve accidentally bought it twice, thinking that I was getting a different shade, only to realize “nope, just two Scandals.” It has a little bit of pink/mauve in it which some may not be partial to on darker yellow-toned skin, but I find it an extremely easy shade to wear. It retails at a very fair price of $23cad and is the most comfortable lip creme formula I’ve ever tried. Which is why it’s also been my most worn. Bare Minerals describes it as being lightweight, and I’ll attest to that, it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing anything and the texture of the product is extremely soft.
Every time I swatch XYZ and Om I find them a little too light for my skin tone, and Bo$$ seems too close to Nudestix’s Greystone, so I’ve held off on purchasing any more. If in the future I finish any of the nudes in my current collection, I will definitely consider expanding my Bare Minerals collection.
These last about 3 hours on me and they fade completely evenly, with no staining of the lip line or flakiness, so reapplying is hassle-free.
Hourglass GIRL Lip Stylo
Hourglass’ GIRL Lip Stylo in Achiever is also one of my most worn lip products of all time. It has quite a thick nub, which may annoy you if you value precision. I personally have no problems with it as I like that I can apply it like a chapstick.
At $40 it’s absurdly priced, and it only lasts 2.5hrs max on me. But the product makes up for it as it’s so easy to reapply, is extremely comfortable, wears easily and is the absolute perfect shade for the office.
Estée Edit The Barest Lip Color
My friend Mahi has been pressuring me to try these for the longest time, even though there’s not much hype around them. Estée Edit Lip Colours retail for $26cad – but they’re now on sale for $18cad, as they’re being discontinued. Like I said. No hype.
These lipsticks are comfortable and have a nice sheen but I think the reason this range really stands outs is the because of the wide selection of shades. Women of colour, from fair to deep will likely be able to find a perfect nude shade for themselves. I really respect that the brand tried to cater to all skin tones.
It’s an easy lipstick to swipe on, the shades perfect and it wears off after 2-3hrs. I like it and would recommend it to everyone from a beginner in makeup to my mom.
Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Color Splash Lipstick
Similar to Smashbox’s Brains ‘n’ Bronze and Nudestix’s Greystone this Tarte lipstick in Boardwalk is also a little too dark for me to feel comfortable wearing it to work every day. At $27 I regret getting this shade because it’s pretty much the short-lasting version of Greystone. But it lives up to Tarte’s claims of being extremely creamy and hydrating, which makes it a very comfortable lipstick to wear.
I swatched many of the shades and wasn’t really able to find anything among the corals/pinks that I could wear to work daily. I thought they would all be too jarring on my skin tone but if you have better luck let me know! As an aside, I thought the packaging was hideous and cheap looking. It’s almost as bad as the old school green Clinique packaging, and that’s saying a lot. Also, what is with the unnecessarily long naming conventions?
Marc Jacobs Le Marc Liquid Lip Creme
Some WOC (aka my friend Mahi) don’t like this shade because of the orange undertones, but I love it. I think it can be very flattering on darker skin tones, as long as you don’t pair it with a pink blush. I particularly think it gives an effortless glowy look when matched with Bobbi Brown’s Bronzer in Deep and Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze and Glow.
Because it doesn’t play all that nicely with my work wardrobe I don’t wear it every day. In fact, I pretty much only wear it when I have an olive dress on or a cream blouse. This Lip Creme is $38 (pricey) and lasts about 3.5 hours on me. Even though it’s quite matte it’s not drying, and there isn’t any visible flakiness when you reapply it, which I really appreciate.
Marc Jacobs Enamoured Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Lipgloss
I was forced to get this lipgloss under threat from my friend, once again Mahi. She clearly has a lot of opinions on nude lip products. I’m not sure I love them as much as she does, especially for the $36cad price point but they aren’t at all sticky and have the perfect amount of shine to make them work appropriate.
Love Drunk is supposed to have some mauve shimmer in it, but I find it has a creme to me.
Update: After two weeks of wearing it I’ve fallen in love and see where Mahi’s appreciation for them comes from. They’re still not as nice as the Bare Mineral liquid mattes (in my humble opinion), but this shade is SO easy to wear and is very flattering on darker skin tones. It’s just so easy to pop on with any look. I love that I can hit the gym in the morning and do a 10 minute face and then head to work looking polished. It also reapplies perfectly at the 2.5 hour mark.
I’ll be honest when I say that I like all of these lip products. There wasn’t one among the bunch I’d say was a bad buy, although some are less frequently worn.
My most highly recommended products from this post are:
- Bare Minerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Color in Scandal
- Hourglass GIRL Lip Stylo in Achiever
- Marc Jacobs Enamored Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer Lipgloss Love Drunk
I hope this was helpful!
