We’re seeing red lips on the runway this summer, meaning you don’t need to wait for winter months or a little black dress to rock them.
Women of colour have a less difficult time than most finding a shade of red to suit them but in case you’re still having trouble I’ve added a few pics of colours I own below. And if you’re taking inspiration from the 2015 summer runway, the most important thing is making sure nothing looks too perfect. No crisp lines, no lip liner, and no concealer around the edges. Make sure to blot some of the pigmentation out of your lips with a tissue after you apply too.
NARS’ Cruella Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is by far the nicest matte lip product I’ve ever come across. And it’s even better that it’s the 2015 birthday gift at Sephora! This is the perfect blue-red lipstick with which to copy the Burberry look (although make sure you avoid caking on the foundation like I did here).
If you’re looking for a cheaper or more accessible version of NARS Cruella then Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Wine With Everything is a great option. I find them to have a nicer texture and scent than Rimmel lipsticks. But they do make dry patches quite visible, so it’s important to have a moisturized base.
Brows at D&G were filled naturally, skin was luminous, and the lips were imperfect.
MAC Diva is a great colour to copy the D&G look with. It’s just dark enough and when applied with a lip brush you can choose how opaque you want the inner portion of your lips to be.
At Zac Posen besides the orange-red lips, they also went for wet slick-back hair. And it’s easy to keep red lips up to date with those two simple changes, especially when there are drugstore options for the lip colour.
Note: Revlon Really Red is supposed to be a dupe for MAC Russian Red.
Burberry Hibiscus is a ruby red which would work well for those ‘just kissed/messy lip line.’ These Lip Velvets are creamy, opaque and feel wonderful on the lips. They’re my absolute favourite high end lipsticks and I highly recommend the colour selection to women of colour.
I don’t have much to say about how NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Damned fits with the runway looks for Summer 2015. But as I said, I absolutely love the NARS formula and this berry toned red is just too pretty on dark skin to pass up.
Hope this was helpful!
